Community fridges are a lesser known but important way to reduce food insecurity. Similar to food pantries, they are places where anyone can donate ingredients and meals for others in the community to take. Community fridges offer realistic, tangible ways for people to make food more accessible in their local communities. Johanna Foulk will share her experience co-running the Poughkeepsie Community Fridge and offer ways to help with food insecurity on the local level.
Johanna Foulk is a high school senior who has worked with the Poughkeepsie Community Fridge since it first started in the fall of 2022. After the fridge’s founders graduated, she worked to keep the fridge running and is now the student leader of the community fridge club. She has organized food drives and fundraisers, and has met with state senators and the Poughkeepsie mayor to discuss the project.
