This Sunday, January 12th, at 11:00 AM:
Buddhist statues are sometimes discussed as if they are primarily symbolic-which Buddhist deity is represented, what mudra the hands are forming, what he is wearing, and so on.
What if they are more like individual people, known for having certain personalities and certain abilities? What if their physical appearance is often relatively unimportant to the worshipper?
Join Sarah Horton, for a discussion about how we talk about Buddhist statues and their significance, both now and in the past.
Sarah Horton is an independent scholar of East Asian religions. She is author of the book Living Buddhist Statues in Early Medieval and Modern Japan.
