September 12 at 11:00 AM:
Ethical Culture invites us to recognize, acknowledge, and affirm the worth of all people. The affirmation of worth is an axiom, a first principle, of Ethical Culture.
It is also an affirmation of a democratic conception of equality, urging us to regard all people as our equals in deserving to be treated with respect, dignity, and decency, and, in addition, as our equals participating in deliberation and decision as citizens and companions in society.
In our troubled nation, in our troubled world, in our troubled selves, can we maintain and strengthen our faith in democracy, in a democratic way of life? Is decency a kind of “corollary” of both the axiom of worth and the vision and hope of democracy?
On Sunday, September 12th, as we begin our 2021-2022 year, join in thinking about our democracy and about acts of decency in the context of our humanist stance in the fellowship of Ethical Culture. Let’s think about ways to participate as citizens of our nation and our world, and let’s hearten and encourage one another to add our modest, but meaningful, contribution to the goodness in our world.
