The history of Western ethical philosophizing has been characterized by a concern to develop and articulate rational, objective, impartial, universal rules or maxims of morality, like, for example, for concepts of justice. It has also been dominated by male philosophers.
In this presentation we will be introduced to a concern for care in ethical thinking that has been thoughtfully articulated since the 1970’s by feminist women philosophers who have brought (in Carol Gilligan’s words) “a different voice” into thinking about moral feeling, judgement, and behavior with a focus on care.
What do we mean when we think of “care”? What are the origins, and nature of care and the experience of caring relationships? And how might care relate to our Ethical Culture perspective?
