What does it mean to be a good soldier—and how should such a soldier be oriented towards war? This presentation will be based on Ashley’s senior Philosophy thesis, examining how military training, language used, and stories we tell shape not only the actions of soldiers but also their moral compass. It confronts the glorification of war and the desire for combat, questioning whether these ideals align with the deeper ethical responsibilities of those sent to fight.
Ashley Choate, a senior at the U.S. Military Academy, is a Philosophy major and cadet-in-charge of the West Point Humanist Association. She will be graduating from USMA this May and will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army as an Adjutant General officer.
