On Friday, April 7 at 7:30, First Friday Films presents two documentaries about the Syrian Civil War. The first will be “The White Helmets” directed by Orlando Von Einsiedel. This film is the 2017 Academy Award winner for documentaries about civilian volunteers in Syria who sift through the rubble after their towns are bombed in order to search for and rescue the civilians trapped beneath. Armed only with their courage and determination they have saved many lives in this brutal civil war. The second film will be “4.1 Miles” directed and produced by Daphne Matziaraki. Just 4.1 miles of open Mediterranean Sea separates Turkey from the Greek island of Lesbos. Every day, hundreds of refugees from the civil war in Syria attempt the crossing in inflatable rafts and flimsy boats. Many of these boats are recklessly overcrowded and many fail to make the crossing. This Academy Award nominated film follows the commander of a Greek coast guard who is charged with saving thousands of refugees. Suggested donation $10. Discussion after the films.
