“IS IT POSSIBLE FOR K-12 EDUCATION TO BE ENGAGING AND ACADEMIC AT THE SAME TIME?” with Mark Jacobs, Director of Longview School

February 6th 2022

For too many years education has focused on rote learning, over-emphasizing memorization and high-stakes testing.  Students have been treated as vessels to be filled with knowledge.  A more modern approach stresses the development of skills.  Still, too many students are being turned off to school and learning.  At Longview school, there is a focus on empowering the students in K-12 education to make decisions in and take on responsibilities for the school community of which they are a part.  In so doing, their education has been expanded outside of the classroom.  Additionally, inside the classroom, the school has pioneered the use of authentic, inquiry-based, and project-oriented learning to engage students so that classes are fun and optimally skill-building at the same time.

Join guest speaker Mark Jacobs who will share Longview’s approach to education offering members an opportunity to try some of these cutting-edge approaches to learning for themselves.

Mark Jacobs is the co-founder, director and history teacher at the Longview School in Brewster, NY.  For 21 years, he has been employing and adapting a model based on student-directed learning in a democratic school setting.  The curriculum focuses on making learning authentic, inquiry-based, and hands-on.
