Lillian Smith is best known as the author of the novel “StrangeFruit” and the book-length autobiographical essay “Killers of the Dream”. Born in 1897, she wrote and spoke powerfully and prolifically against the evils of segregation and white supremacy; a remarkable and admirable woman who today, would be recognized as an articulate and profound anti-racist. Ms. Smith’s life and legacy exemplify many of our Ethical Culture values and knowing a bit of her life story may inspire us all.
