“Psychiatric Asylums -– Do We Need Them Again?” With Discussion Leader Klaus Schreiber

July 7, 2021 by Robin

ESNW Summer Sunday Discussion Sunday July 11th at 11:00 AM

Live and In-Person on the ESNW Patio

Please Note: Chairs will be spaced wide apart (minimum 6 ft.). If you are fully vaccinated, masks are optional; if you are not fully vaccinated, masks must be worn.

Serious mental illness has been part of humankind since we have recorded history. Since the Middle Ages, societies throughout the world have attempted to care for and treat their ill members in various ways – more or less successfully. Currently, most of the chronically mental ill people in the US are either living uncared for in the streets or are incarcerated with poor psychiatric care. As there is a strong push for decarceration, we need to think more urgently about the care and treatment of these vulnerable members of our society.

Here are some suggested discussion points:
Has Serious Mental Illness (SMI) changed or only our understanding
and caring for persons with SMI?
What contributed to the failure of the 1963 Community Mental Health Act? Underfunding? Continued stigmatization of mental illness as risk for public safety? Lack of professional and political leadership? Unrealistic expectations?

What care could you envision for people with Serious Mental Illness?
Could the example of Trieste be achieved in the US?
