The practice of saving endangered species in critical habitats around the world is a challenging endeavor, which includes a variety of ethical concerns. Protecting important forests through government-run parks that exclude people — including local communities — is increasingly seen as ineffective, as well as ethically complicated. However, there are community-based models now underway in some areas to address these concerns and that provide greater impact.
Erika Archibald has been a communications specialist for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for more than 20 years. She has also served as a professor of journalism, an editor for Atlanta magazine, marketing director for Zoo Atlanta and volunteers for many grassroots environmental organizations.
