Sunday, February 9th at 11:00 AM:
There is a long-standing argument regarding whether human characteristics are primarily inherited (nature) or learned (nurture). Those who have taken the nature position often have used the science or pseudoscience of genetics to reinforce their prejudices. Those who have taken the nature position have often ignored good genetic science. Join Milt Steinberg in adiscussion of these positions and a relatively newly understood phenomenon, epigenetics, which mitigates against the rigidity of the nature-nurture dichotomy. We’ll talk about the mechanism of heredity and and how epigenetics works. We’ll discuss the promise and peril of future genetic manipulation.
Milton Steinberg is Professor Emeritus from Marymount College of Fordham University. He has a Ph.D. in neuropsychology from the City University of New York.
