The Martin Luther King we honor on his birthday is conventionally presented in a way that downplays his searing critique of American society including his attack on militarism, imperialism and capitalism in order to render him presentable. King was, in fact far more radical than would leave mainstream America comfortable. Guest speaker Dr. Joe Chuman will look at King’s deeper analysis of racism and the radical dimensions of his thought.
Dr. Joe Chuman was Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County, NJ since 1974, retiring as Leader Emeritus in December, 2020. He currently serves as a part-time leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Dr. Chuman is an Adjunct Professor of Human Rights for the graduate programs at Columbia University and Hunter College.
