Viewing the labor movement from a broad-spectrum point of view: What role did unions play at the outset of their formation in an industrialized society? How has that role changed over time as the relative strength of the labor movement has become a reflection, not of what the movement has accomplished, but of how the movement is perceived in what has become a red/blue nation? The foundational basis of our country was to create a more perfect union! In that context, let’s see if we can figure out what the slogan, “Union Strong” means.
Mr. Cohen has been practicing law for more than 50 years. He now specializes in teaching alternate dispute resolution methodologies. He has also, as NYSUT Counsel, represented individuals and unions in state/federal courts and before arbitration tribunals. In addition, he has trained lay people to act as advocates before state regulatory agencies and arbitration panels where representation by a lawyer is not required, e.g. teacher union leaders via programs through the Cornell School of Industrial Labor Relations and the AFT Leadership Council.
