In the growth and development of human beings, psychologists and others discern normal developmental “stages”. The eminent psychoanalyst Erik Erickson wrote of eight stages of life and described the “crisis” of growth inherent in each stage. He theorized that specific virtues emerge in each crisis and facilitate our ability to resolve those crises in order to emerge better prepared for the next stage of living. Erikson’s humanistic approach and its ethical implications are easily recognizable in our own lived experiences and observations. His theory offers opportunities to think about simple ways in which we can all contribute to shaping better relationships, congenial communities and a more decent world.
